Throughout your life there’ll be many times when you’ll need to demonstrate some self-discipline. Sometimes you will succeed and sometimes you will struggle with it. These days, we live in a frantic world often juggling our sanity with work, family, friends and still trying to snatch some down-time. Whether we’re trying to be disciplined at school to study, or at work to meet deadlines, at home for domestic chores or when dieting; we rely on self-discipline more than we realise, but sadly we’re not always good at it. Here are 5 ways to improve those skills…
.Set Clear Goals- This step is so important when demonstrating self-discipline. Firstly, set the goal and make it clear. Secondly, list the things that help you improve performance- get more sleep, eat more fruit, etc. Thirdly, prioritise which things on the list are most important for you and make them possible to achieve by working them into your work commitments and other responsibilities. Always be aware and conscious of your long-term goal.
.Motivate Yourself- Anxiety stems from the self-belief that you are not in control of your own circumstances. Changing your mindset to believe that you are in control of your life rather than at the whimsy of the universe will improve your overall outlook on your goals.
.Know Your Triggers- If you find you’re less likely to stick to your goal after a restless night then make sure you get an adequate amount of sleep to avoid making excuses for yourself. Stay away from ‘negative Nancy’s’ and be 100% committed to your goal. Situations, food or certain people may trigger certain responses in you – avoid any temptations or particular circumstances that will influence your self-discipline for the worse.
.Choose Positivity- When you’re feeling overwhelmed or stressed choose to be positive about your challenges. It’s important to change your mindset, think of them as obstacles you can definitely overcome. Choosing to be positive will be a lot more productive than choosing to be a misery guts.
.Accountability Buddies- It’s always nice to have someone by your side. For instance, choosing a healthier lifestyle can be easier when you have someone who shares a similar goal. For example, joining a gym and surrounding yourself with people that also want to lose weight and eat healthier will help you stay on track and allow you to avoid any temptations that might set you back. This support and constant reminder of your goal will improve your self-discipline.
